Behind the Scenes Performance Management

Though the news may not be easy to hear, you need to know…you need to know what was shared behind the scenes that kept you from getting that promotion. How you handle this difficult conversation will have a bearing on how you are viewed in the future and whether or not you can rise up the next time a position is available. You don’t want to mess this up.

Here are a few performance management training tips on how to raise the question with your boss or with any others who shared in the promotion decision…

  • State your sincere desire to learn. If you can ferret out the reason you were overlooked, you then have the opportunity to improve that behavior.
  • Probe for specifics. General comments like “you are not a team player” don’t give you enough information.
  • Accept the feedback with equanimity. If you challenge the assessment or become defensive, you could be seen as immature and unworthy of advancement. Keep your cool.

Ask for the truth and act upon what you learn. This is the way to manage your performance for next time.
