One Way to Better Deal with Difficult Conversations

Do you stress over the prospect of having difficult conversations to the point of getting really hot under the collar?

Let’s consider one of the most difficult conversations in the corporate world—the one where you have to confront substandard employee performance. As a leader, it is your job (not Human Resources’) to put someone on notice that they need to shape up or else

A good portion of performance management training deals with how best to handle this uncomfortable situation. But here’s a new tactic. Lead with the bottom line, Yes, that’s right. Do not avoid the worst of the news. That can only exacerbate the stress on both the giver and the receiver. If you are more direct, the worst is over and both of you can deal with possible solutions without dreading the bombshell…it’s already been delivered!

There will be a sense of relief in coming to the point at the beginning. And, unless it’s a total surprise, the receiver of the bad news will find this approach far more considerate than a long, drawn-out avoidance of the inevitable.
