You
can hear the universal groans as the time for performance reviews approaches.
Especially if you have not been having regular conversations with your
employees during the year, the difficulty of holding a truly effective and
personal review can be defeating. Why not ask your employees to help?
A
week or so before your scheduled meetings, ask employees
to write down what they consider their best moments at work during the past
year. Performance management training experts maintain that this exercise will help you attain several goals:
- You will have a list of their proudest accomplishments and will be able to recognize each and every one.
- The review will not be full of boiler-plate comments but, instead, will be very personal and specific in nature.
- You will have a much better understanding of each employee…what they value, how they operate, and what their standards for meaningful contributions at work may be.
With a little preparation and help, performance appraisals can be a time to get to know your employees better and encourage them in their improvement efforts.
