If
you are looking to get ahead (aren’t we all?), consider getting a sponsor…not
just a mentor. Each has a different role and help provide guidance to succeed.
Performance management training experts recommend having a mentor who will be there to offer advice and guide you as needed. You lean on mentors for feedback, both positive
and negative, that will help you gain experience and expertise.
What
value can a sponsor add? Sponsors have connections that can boost your career
trajectory right into the executive suite or onto a critical and visible
project. They advocate for you and for your talents and they have credibility
at the highest levels. Their motivation is your success which will ultimately
enhance their own.
How
do you acquire a sponsor? Identify the person in your organization who would be
most beneficial as an internal ally and advocate. Then think about what you can
offer in return. Perhaps you have a talent they lack but that can benefit them.
The most productive relationships work both ways.
