It
happens now and then in the workplace. Someone gets really riled up and talks
to you in a wild and loud rage. How can you respond in a way that defuses the
situation?
Your aim, performance management training experts say, should be to help your colleague vent their negative emotions and move on. Is it better to jump in
with advice or perhaps to just sit tight until they run out of steam? Actually,
the recommended reaction is neither of those approaches. Rather, it is most
effective to ask questions.
Try
to find out the source and reason for their frustrations. The more you
understand about the problem, the more able you enable them to find a solution.
Once
they have settled down, they will be ready to think about how to rectify the
situation. It is not up to you to provide the answer. Your role has been to
help them articulate their feelings and then better analyze what to do next.
