Wouldn’t it be great if you could just imagine the path
to success and then be on your merry way toward your goal? Actually,
performance management training experts say that this is exactly what you can
do.
They say that you should imagine your goal and then write
it down. Be as specific as possible. Then think through each individual step on
the path toward that goal.
Researchers say that picturing yourself carrying out and
achieving each milestone actually primes your brain in the right direction. An
additional benefit is that the mental images make the achievement more “real”
and can give you the confidence you may have been lacking to accomplish your
objective. You can even “test” different ways to proceed to find the most
direct path and one that fits your interests and abilities most comfortably.
The next time you (or your direct reports) feel stuck or
have lost your motivation, try imagining the path to success. It works.
