When
all is said and done, you cannot rely upon others for your professional growth.
It is, as they say, “Up to you.”
Take charge of your own performance management training. If you want to expand your
influence and increase your business savvy, look for growth opportunities first
within your own firm. Can you find an internal mentor to help you learn the
ropes? Are there training programs
available to you? Can you sign up for classes that are in an area new to you?
Go ahead. This is your chance to raise your profile and explore new roles.
If
no such opportunities exist within your organization, look outside the company for
ways to practice new skills or make new connections. Can you offer to speak at
a professional gathering? How about organizing a community-wide volunteer
effort? Is there a junior college nearby that could benefit from your practical
experience as a teacher or mentor?
Reach
out and welcome learning challenges. Make your increasing value visible so you
are more often invited to sit at the “grown-up” table.
